Content for informational purposes
Aquarium Life Hub content is for general informational purposes only. Fishkeeping depends on conditions we cannot see — your tap water chemistry, tank volume, stocking density, equipment, lighting, and dozens of other variables. What works on our tanks may not work identically on yours.
Fish species identification
Photo-based species identification is unreliable for safety-critical decisions. Some “common name” fish in the trade are actually multiple species with different care needs. Verify with a reputable taxonomic source or your local public aquarium before assuming care requirements apply to your specific fish.
Medications and water treatments
Read product labels in full before use. Many fish medications are species-sensitive — scaleless fish (loaches, catfish), invertebrates (shrimp, snails), and certain biotopes (planted tanks) can be harmed by treatments safe in other contexts. Copper-based medications kill most invertebrates instantly.
Water quality and testing
Our advice assumes you test water and act on the results. Without basic test kit access (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH at minimum), no aquarium guidance can be applied responsibly. Test strips give rough estimates; liquid test kits are far more accurate.
Children, pets, and safety
Aquariums combine water, electricity, and glass. Children should be supervised around tanks. Some fish medications are toxic if ingested. Keep medications, fertilizers, and CO2 cylinders out of reach of children and pets. Always unplug electrical equipment before placing hands in the tank.
Local regulations
Some fish, plants, and invertebrates sold in the trade are invasive or restricted in particular regions. Never release aquarium animals or plants into local waterways — even native species. Check whether the species you keep is regulated locally before purchase.
